The Luise-Kiesselbach Tunnel and the Heckenstallerstrasse Tunnel are two road tunnels in the southwestern section of Munich's Middle Ring Road. The Luise-Kiesselbach Tunnel is 1530m long. Immediately to the east is the Heckenstallerstrasse Tunnel, which is 620m long. The two tunnels are used by approximately 100000 vehicles daily.
The tunnels have multiple entrances and exits, thus ensuring the connection of the Middle Ring Road to the surrounding residential areas and to the A95 and A96 motorways.
Extensive preliminary studies preceded the planning of the tunnels. The tunnels are designed to handle the high traffic volume. But they are also intended to protect residents from excessive noise and air pollution.
Both tunnels are equipped with longitudinal ventilation using jet fans. This is permissible even with this tunnel length due to the short distances between the emergency exits. Additional emergency stairwells are each equipped with pressurisation systems.
Both tunnels were opened to traffic in 2015. The following images provide an impression of the tunnels in May and June 2015, a few weeks before they were opened to traffic.
Dr. Riess was involved in the project as project manager for tunnel ventilation design and air dispersion studies from 1997 to 2015:
